International academic colloquium Perspectives on a Warped Geometry at the Gallery of Spiš Artists aims to explore the dynamic potential of geometric language in contemporary fine art. Geometry is both a visual principle and a philosophical framework for probing reality, space and time in terms of its reflection of the contemporary world. The colloquium sparks an international dialogue which seeks to examine the parallels between formal approaches and the personal, social and political semantics which artists bring to their work through geometry.

WEDNESDAY, 17.00 – 19.00 / ORBIS PICTUS

15.00 – 17.00 / Registration

17.00 – 18.00

Didactic Quadrilateral & At Right Angles

18.00 – 18.30
Mgr. art. Katarína Balúnová, ArtD. (SK): Beyond the circle

Visual artist and lecturer, Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, www.katarinabalunova.com

The lecture outlines the initial impetus for the interest in geometric abstraction in postconceptual art, drawing connections between rigid form and philosophy in which the circle as a symbol of the cyclical enables the deconstruction of fixed structures. Practical examples will be used to elicit the transcendence of the ideal towards fragmentation and organic instability, inspired by the processes of entropy and climate change.

18.30 – 19.00
Open discussion, alternating presentations, closing remarks

THURSDAY, 9.30 – 13.30 / COLLOQUIUM

8.00 – 9.30 / Registration

9.30 – 10.00
prof. Štefan Balázs, ArtD. (SK): From Painting to Object
Visual artist and lecturer, Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, www.balazs.eu.sk

The presentation maps the transformative process from the flat plane of the painted canvas to the three-dimensional object. The artist expands planar compositions into space through the use of experiments with materials – transitioning from the canvas to hybrid structures in which the painting emerges as a tactile object. Examples from his educational and artistic practice illustrate how this shift can reflect changes in how we perceive reality.

10.00 – 10.30
Mag. um. Katja Pál (HU / SL): A Description of Line and Space
Visual artist, www.katjapal.com

The lecture discusses the idea of the line as a minimal intervention that forms spatial relationships rather than defining form. In her work, the artist explores the line as a threshold of perception where the planar begins to behave as a spatial form and the painting is transformed into an object. Katja Pal presents an analytical process for exploring the limits of the medium of painting in which visual refinement serves as a tool for grasping the relationships between the body, space and perception.

10.30 – 11.00
Dr. Joanna Łuczaj (PL): The Cartography of Everyday Life
Visual artist and curator, www.discursivegeometry.art

The artist (Joa Zak) presents the concept of the artistic mapping of human movement and subconscious patterns in physical space. She approaches everyday life as an ethnographic terrain in which individual movement forms a drawing marked out by the body in space. Rather than serving as a means of geographic orientation, this cartography uncovers the relationship between place and experience, thereby bringing to light an archive of unseen histories.

11.00 – 11.30 / Break, refreshments

11.30 – 12.00
Dr. Katarzyna Jarząb (PL): The Grid in Abstract Painting
Visual artist and lecturer, Jan Dlugosz University, Częstochowa, www.katarzynajarzab.com

The artist has long been interested in the concept of the grid, the search for new possibilities in abstraction, and the exploration of the limits of mathematical order. In her art, mathematical order – the calculation of the lines which intersect to form a grid – combines with spontaneity and the energy of the painterly gesture. The lecture reveals how the creative field can be constantly developed and expanded through the use of repetitive and seemingly restrictive means.

12.00 – 12.30
doc. Pavol Rusko, ArtD. (SK): One Corner of the Quadrilateral
Visual artist and lecturer, Catholic University in Ružomberok, @rusko_pavol

The artist sheds light on the principles of his work, an artistic approach that is embedded in geometry. Rhythm, symmetry and the organic variability of geometric systems evoke movement, transience and metaphysical balance. Duplicated arrangements reveal a yearning for order in the chaos of the world. Compositions form a delicate equilibrium in which subtle variations in colour acquire the dynamics of an optical illusion.
