EXHIBITION PLAN FOR 2024
to 7th April 2024
ĽUBO STACHO: PRAYER / SACRAL ELEMENTUM VI.
A chronological projection of the five decades of the artist’s creative work in thematic dialogues with an accent on spiritual motifs, in genres ranging from classical photography to new media. The exhibition reflects upon the spiritual essence of Stacho’s art and its interest in the depiction of religious themes in selected cycles which are dominated by metaphor and the passage of time, but also a spiritual and artistic richness of faith. The exhibition is presented as part of the Year of Sacred Art.
Themes cycle. Curators: Lucia Benická – GUS, Monika Stacho.
HELMUT BISTIKA: herzLicht
The exhibition is held on the occasion of the 60th birthday of an artist whose entire creative career has been spent far from the hub of the art world. The connection between the artist’s works and people with learning disabilities, with whom he has long worked, opens up the potential for perceiving and interpreting exterior and interior worlds and, no less significantly, represents a call for the tolerance of otherness. His work develops in isolation and is influenced by his closer identification with German-speaking countries than with Slovakia. Formally, his work can be categorised as art brut, but the artist does not see this as important; it is the creative process itself which is essential, freedom of expression and the joy of play.
Profiles cycle. Curator: Katarína Balúnová – GUS.
TOMÁŠ CETERA: glob/log
The solo exhibition of the Spiš artist is a record of glocal fragments in the post-truth era. The title of the exhibition is both onomatopoeic, reflecting the absurdity of the world, but also serves as a symbolic immersion in the living spaces of our picturesque neighbours. The passions of collectors, breeders and hunters reflect wider social relationships and emerge as a fertile ground for the formation of new conspiracy theories. An important role is also played by the artist’s own past and his childhood spent in a vast featureless housing estate during the declining years of socialist utopias.

17th April – 21st July 2024
THE DANCE OF THE URBAN SHAMAN
The thematic exhibition draws attention to neo-shamanism, the rebirth of magic and the descent into the world of the subconscious through the works of 25 artists from the Gallery’s collection and four guest artists (HU, FR, IN, DE).
Part of the Collection in Dialogue exhibition cycle. Curator: Mgr. art. Katarína Balúnová, ArtD. – GUS.
MARTIN KACVINSKÝ: Non-local Paintings
In his work, the artist takes critical aim at the individual and contemporary society as a whole. His art is characterised above all by its experimental approach and the search for painterly expression through striking gestures.
Part of the Profiles / Spiš Artists exhibition cycleCurator: Mgr. art. Katarína Balúnová, ArtD. – GUS.
ŠTEFAN HUDZÍK: The Unseen Atelier
The exhibition presents a comprehensive selection of works by the Spiš sculptor to commemorate the 70th anniversary of his birth. The unorthodox format in which the works are displayed offers a glimpse into the creative environment – the improvisational “open studio” which the artist left for posterity. Part of the Jubilees / Spiš Artists exhibition cycle. Curator: Mgr. Kamila Paceková – GUS.
ANNAMÁRIA MIKULÍKOVÁ: Ephemera
A selection of works by a designer who has long been active on the international art scene. Her jewellery and applied art explore ecological dimensions, with the ephemeral nature of the materials emphasising the uncertain existence of life.
Part of the Profiles / Spiš Artists exhibition cycle. Curator: Mgr. Kamila Paceková – GUS.
31st July 2024 – 30th March 2025
JOZEF HANULA: REMINISCENCES
The exhibition offers the first comprehensive approach to the work of Jozef Hanula featuring art from private collections and the holdings of several Slovak galleries. The project is the result of academic research based on the ongoing re-evaluation of works by Hanula from the Gallery of Spiš Artist’s collection which feature in the Gallery’s permanent exhibition devoted to the artist. This reassessment aims to define the artist’s oeuvre within the context of the development of Slovak fine art.
Part of the Profiles / Spiš Artists exhibition cycle. Curator: Mgr. Kamila Paceková – GUS.
31st July – 1st December 2024
MIROSLAV BROOŠ: MB BANK. Surroundings
A site-specific installation which has emerged from the artist’s participative projects. The concept of transferring or gifting land poses questions relating to identity and our ancestral legacy in addition to wider issues such as globalisation, multiculturalism, emigration and immigration. Part of the Themes exhibition cycle. Curator: Mgr. art. Katarína Balúnová, ArtD. – GUS.
JÁN KEKELI: The Floating Floor
A selection of the artist’s photographic works which are marked by a striving for the strict objectivization of reality or the creation of new impressions, in which the search for answers is combined with the expression of an intimate mapping of the experience and perception of the world. Part of the Profiles exhibition cycle. Curator: Mgr. Lucia Benická – GUS.
11th December 2024 – 30th March 2025
RIGHT-ANGLED PERSPECTIVE
The exhibition presents works by more than twenty artists from the Gallery’s collection in dialogue with those of guest artists from both Slovakia and abroad (SK, CZ, HU, ES, PL). Ranging from the early 20th century to the present, the selected works explore the search for a geometrical basis to the principles of composition. Various media, including graphic works, paintings, objects and video art, attest to the key role of geometrical abstraction as one of the most important elements of fine art.

EVA ČARNOKÁ: 50 Shades of Black
A selection of works to celebrate the 50th birthday of an artist whose works feature prominently in the Gallery’s collection in forms ranging from graphic experimentation, junk art and objects to installations.
Part of the Jubilees exhibition cycle. Curator: Mgr. Mira Putišová.
